A month ago, we started getting everyone excited for another season at the Worthington Farmers Market. At that time, we talked about how farmers markets naturally grow throughout the summer as gardens mature and harvests begin to arrive.
Now, as we move through the third week of the season, we are starting to see that transformation happen.
Fresh Produce Is Beginning to Arrive
One of the most common questions we hear early in the season is, “Where are all the vegetables?”
The answer is simple: they are growing.
Unlike grocery stores that source products from around the country or even around the world, many of our vendors are selling what they grow themselves. That means produce arrives when nature says it is ready.
The good news is that we are beginning to see those first harvests make their way to market.
Fresh greens, herbs, radishes, onions, peas, and other early-season vegetables are starting to appear on vendor tables. Every week brings a little more variety as gardens continue to grow and producers begin harvesting additional crops.
For shoppers who love fresh, local produce, this is an exciting time of year. These early vegetables are often picked within hours of market day, providing freshness and flavor that is hard to beat.
Every Week Looks Different
One of the things that makes a farmers market unique is that it changes throughout the season.
A visit in June looks different than a visit in July. A visit in July looks different than one in August or September.
As produce becomes available, vendor booths continue to fill out with new products and seasonal favorites. Alongside fresh vegetables, shoppers will find baked goods, canned products, handmade items, specialty foods, plants, and more.
The market is still building, and some of the biggest harvests of the year are yet to come.
More Than a Place to Shop
The market continues to be a gathering place for the community.
Families are stopping by. Neighbors are catching up with one another. Children are participating in weekly activities and exploring new foods through the PoPs (Power of Produce) program.
Since launching on June 16, SNAP and PoPs tokens have helped connect families with fresh local foods while supporting our local vendors.
It is rewarding to see people not only shopping at the market but also spending time there—visiting, learning, and enjoying the experience.
Looking Ahead
As we move deeper into the summer, shoppers can look forward to even more local produce arriving each week. Sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, melons, and many other seasonal favorites are on the horizon.
That is one of the joys of shopping at a farmers market. There is always something new to discover.
Whether you have visited every week or have not made it down yet this season, now is a great time to stop by and see how the market is growing.
After all, the season is just getting started.
The Worthington Farmers Market is held Tuesdays from 2:00–5:30 p.m. at the Downtown Pavilion and Saturdays from 7:00 a.m.–Noon at the Ace Hardware parking lot. We hope to see you soon!
