🌍 Worthington’s International Festival: A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Connection

international festival

Every summer, the city of Worthington, Minnesota, comes alive with the sights, sounds, and flavors of cultures from around the world. The Worthington International Festival is more than just an event — it’s a vibrant tribute to the community’s rich diversity and the many cultures that help shape its identity.

✨ A Brief History

The festival began in 1994, thanks to the efforts of the Worthington Cultural Diversity Coalition. What started as a modest gathering at the Worthington Junior High — complete with a soccer tournament, international food, music, and crafts — drew an enthusiastic crowd of 1,000–2,000 people. From those early days, the festival has grown in both size and significance, becoming one of southwest Minnesota’s most cherished traditions.

Today, the event is held at the Nobles County Government Center lawn and Sailboard Beach, drawing visitors from near and far. It’s a true reflection of the community’s welcoming spirit and commitment to celebrating its multicultural roots.

🎯 The Purpose Behind the Festival

At its heart, the International Festival is about honoring diversity and fostering understanding. Worthington is home to residents from all over the world — and the festival provides a space for these cultures to share their stories, traditions, and talents.

The festival aims to:
âś… Promote cultural exchange through music, dance, art, and food
âś… Build community connections by bringing people together
✅ Celebrate the important role immigrant communities play in shaping Worthington’s economy, identity, and daily life

From flag processions and artisan markets to youth showcases and ethnic food vendors, the festival invites everyone to experience and appreciate the beauty of cultures different from their own.
